I made a new friend, and I don't think it was an accident. She is amazing in so many ways, and we just gel like we've known each other for centuries. Her birthday was recently, and so since I am a broke bitch, I decided that the only gift I could afford to give her was the gift of my brain. So I wrote her this poem and framed it for her. And then proceeded to bawl my eyes out reading it to her.
The ballad of Victoria Sue-Who
She marches to a beat no band has ever known,
With a history wrapped in a kingdom all her own.
She dances with shadows and talks to the lark,
With a pocket full of gummies and a mind like a spark.
She’s carried old, deep storms from a childhood left behind,
Yet is raising two wonderful sons and has the truest heart to find.
At home with her sweet cats curling up softly by her side,
In a space of gentle comfort where her favorite things abide.
Right there in our book club, where our stories all began,
“She’s amazing,” my brain exclaimed, and so to her side I ran.
Though cautious of a world with so much she cannot touch,
When the smallest speck of celery can often ask too much.
Twirling a lock of hair around a thoughtful hand,
She looks at life with questions few could ever understand.
Like Harriet the Spy with her secret notebook tight,
She writes down all her observations, getting people right.
Yet through the fragile boundaries and battles past,
She offers up a warmth that makes the shadows cast.
For in her crowded mind and the chaos she has been,
She looks right through the noise and makes me feel so seen.
Don’t ask her to follow the straight-drawn line,
Her chaos is poetry, vibrant and fine.
For normal is quiet, and common is grey,
She paints the whole canvas a different way.
Now open your notebook, my dear, and turn to a brand-new page,
To write a beautiful chapter at your brand-new age.
